Larceny is defined in Virginia as the wrongful taking of the goods of another without the owner's consent and with the intention to permanently deprive the owner of possession of the goods. The most common type of petit larceny is basic shoplifting.
When shoplifting is prosecuted in New York State, it is usually written up as a violation of the statue for “Petit Larceny,” or “PL 155.25.” Petit Larceny is a misdemeanor in The State of New York and is punishable by up to one year in jail.
Nevada law defines petit larceny as the intentional taking of another person’s property (without permission) when the value of the items is less than $1,200.00. If the stolen property is valued at $1,200.00 or more, the offense would be grand larceny.
