Section 2: What is Mental Health First Aid?

    • Mental health first aid is a training program that teaches people how to help a person developing a mental health problem (including a substance misuse problem), experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

    • Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

    • Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

    • Over time, your mental health can change. For example, you may be dealing with a difficult situation, such as trying to manage a chronic illness, taking care of an ill relative, or facing money problems.

    • Mental health refers to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being. It is all about how people think, feel, and behave. People sometimes use the term “mental health” to mean the absence of a mental disorder.

    • Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity. CDC works to understand ACEs and prevent them.

    • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood. ACEs can include violence, abuse, and growing up in a family with mental health or substance use problems. Toxic stress from ACEs can change brain development.

    • Childhood is a vulnerable time, and what happens to us then has long deep impacts. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) describe traumatic experiences that can have lasting effects into adulthood. The more ACEs experienced, the more challenging life.

    • ACE(s) and Resiliency in Trauma Informed Care

    • Trauma-informed care shifts the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” A trauma-informed approach to care acknowledges that health care organizations and care teams need to have a complete picture of a patient’s life situation —

    • Trauma-informed care: What it is, and why it’s important. The CDC statistics on abuse and violence in the United States are sobering. They report that one in four children experiences some sort of maltreatment (physical, sexual, or emotional abuse).

Section 6: Coaching Ethics, Appreciative Inquiry, Motivational Interviewing and Stages of Change Philosophy

    • The ICF Code of Ethics describes the ICF core values, ethical principles and ethical standards of behavior for all ICF Professionals. ICF implemented the current version of the Code in January 2020.

    • In a booming industry as unregulated as coaching, it is difficult to navigate – for both coaches and clients – the different practices, approaches, and styles of coaching. This huge variety is a gift because it allows diversity and variety.

    • Coaching is not about the coach; it is always about the client. That is the only ethic to remember. International Coaching federation, EMCC and others have laid down codes of professional conduct based on laws and prevailing customs for members...

    • Coaching ethics is one of the most important things every newcomer to the field should learn. Good coaching won’t happen if you don’t maintain a clear understanding of the ethical boundaries that guide all coaching sessions.

    • Appreciative Inquiry is about the search for the best in people, their organizations, and the strengths-filled, opportunity-rich world around them.

    • Motivational interviewing is a unique approach to counseling that empowers clients. The counselor is a partner in a process that enables the client to lead and change.

    • Motivational interviewing (MI) is a client-centered approach to behavior change and one of the most effective coaching tools for partnering with clients to improve their outcomes and results.

    • The 5 Stages of Change Model is a very useful framework that describes the series of stages we go through to change our lifestyle habits. The critical assumption that underpins this model is that behavioral changes do not happen in one step...
